Have you seen Mark Zuckerberg brag about having total control of billions of people’s stolen data or in 2022 a deepfake video was released of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy asking his troops to surrender? If your answer is yes, then you’ve seen a deepfake. Deepfake technology has gained attention as a powerful tool for creating highly realistic synthetic but fake media. It combines deep learning of a branch of artificial intelligence with the ability to create fake content. These are capable of manipulating images, videos and audio to produce convincing yet fabricated content. While deepfakes have the potential for entertainment and creative purposes they also pose serious ethical and societal issues. The potential applications of deepfakes range from entertainment and art to political manipulation and fraud. However, the technology also raises concerns about the misuse of such powerful tools and the potential for misinformation and deception.
Types of Deepfake Misuse:
1. Political Manipulation: Deepfakes have been used to manipulate political discourse by superimposing the faces of influential figures onto videos making them appear to say or do things they never did. This not only spreads falsehoods but can also create significant political unrest.
2. Revenge Porn and Cyber-bullying: Deepfakes have become a tool for creating explicit or sexually suggestive content utilising the faces of unsuspecting individuals without their consent. This form of harassment can have severe emotional and psychological consequences for the victims.
3. Fraud and Scams: Text, photos, and video are not the only things that neural networks and artificial intelligence can do. They also can clone a human voice. Criminals can use deepfakes to mimic the voices of individuals in positions of authority such as company CEOs to deceive employees into disclosing sensitive information or initiating fraudulent transactions.
4. Identity Theft and Financial Fraud: Deepfake technology can be used to create new identities and steal the identities of real people. Attackers use the technology to create false documents or fake their victim’s voice, which enables them to create accounts or purchase products by pretending to be that person.
5. Automated Disinformation Attacks: Deepfake can also be used to spread automated disinformation attacks, such as conspiracy theories and incorrect theories about political and social issues. Recent Example: Kerala Police recently investigated a case where scammers duped a victim of Rs 40,000 using AI-powered ‘deepfake’ technology. The scammer convincingly manipulated the victim into transferring money for a fabricated medical emergency by impersonating a former colleague through a video call.
